Multitudes Nominated for Grammy, Best Engineered Album
Plus upcoming Mexico City festival & 2nd Calgary show added on Finale Tour
Multitudes was nominated for best engineered record on Friday. This is a technical category but as every musician knows, sitting in a room trying to close the gap between what you hear and what you want to hear is as much a creative journey as it is technical, and so much is in the hands (or at the fingertips) of the engineers.
When recording the Reminder and Metals, we made an ensemble, learned the songs and then put mics in a room music was happening in. It’s reductive to say there wasn’t technical tightrope walking (by Robbie!) for those records as well, but this one was different out the gates. I wanted these songs to take shape in a specific enough sonic space that I needed to make friends with a process that, even as a producer, I’d always approached laterally. As if the computer and its outboard pals are anything less than instruments, when in the right hands.
This nomination is for those wielders of mellifluous machines! For our small team of collaborators who paced and puzzled and yelled at inanimate objects and sat for hours in front of soloed kick drums, who I brought burritos and night coffee and who sent mixes many a 3am and worked to understand an idea and push me past it. And who had the skill and pep (I call Michael ‘The Hummingbird’ bc he would move so fast and furious when an idea would take him) to use the machinery of recording to build feelings. It’s a special person who can make soft curves with ones and zeros, and I’m grateful to them! Congrats to Michael Harris, Robbie Lackritz, Joseph Lorge and Blake Mills, our mastering engineer Patricia Sullivan … and thanks to Mocky, our co-producer, who framed the scenario much of this played out inside of.
